Feedback + Hard Mix Psychedelia

Experiements in pixel burning and Data moshing.

Naivety brings out new results.

First, I imagined particles pulsating in response to the low end of an ambient track I had been working on. The track in question is a chopped + screwed + heavily stretched version of a simple piano melody, inspired by Thursday Afternoon by Brian Eno. I ended up submitting the track for my friends short film, not sure when I'll get to see it. It sounds like some kind of divine rebellion. Like light piercing out tightly clasped hands, burning the captor.


Anyway I knew absolutely nothing about Touchdesigner and through sheer tyranny of will, I managed to map a particle decay of a simple cube to the bass of my track.


Dealing with 3D space was cumbersome so I very quickly decided to render and play around with the image filters and pixel manipulators built-in. I used feedback edge to a really interesting effect (mapping a CHOP analyze function to the Edge Strength and Size parameters) in succession with a couple pixelate TOP's and a few Bloom TOP's.


Finally, while recording the output visual I manually played around with the Feedback Gain.


Afterwards in Davinci, I cut the video from a couple separate takes and layered them with a Hard Mix.

Hard Mix "produces high-contrast, posterized results by forcing pixels to either black, white, or one of the primary colors (red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow)"


I really love the look of a hard mix or a color burn especially when you render with a low resolution and then image scale by nearest neighbour.

Nearest neighbor interpolation is a fast, simple resampling method that assigns the value of the closest original pixel to new, interpolated pixels


It has the effect of making some really weird artifacts.
